GREY A Wall Drawing
2008-ongoing
hair nets, translucent glassine food bags, straight pins
each element: 7 X 6 inches
This is a WALL DRAWING consisting of 100 mostly vintage hair nets made for modern, middle/upper class white North American women. "Not a Hair Out of Place." Traditionally made by young Chinese women using Chinese hair, later Korean, German and other young girls wove them for the same North American market. Their packaging left no doubt about their intended social mark, showing bold, colorful lithographs of white women, at home, in sport, boudoir and open car. The hair nets were advertised as "invisible." The food bags act as "through a glass darkly."
